Eye Exam

A general eye exam will be performed by either an optometrist or an opthamologist. Both are trained to perfom general ( routine ) eye examinations. Generally, an optometrist is seen for routine vision, and corrective eye wear examinations and an opthamologist will be seen for most surgical needs such as cataract surgery and lasik surgery.

Your eye examination will consist of a review of your health history (and your family), an evaluation on your vision (either nearsighted or farsighted), a medical screening for things such as glaucoma and cataracts, any astigmatisms will be detected during this process as well as any need for progressive lenses or bifocals. It is recommmeneded that a comprehensive eye exam should be checked routinely to ensure the best level of vision during your lifetime. Most will have their vision checked on a yearly basis and many vision insurances will have an allowance/co-pay for yearly examinations.

During an eye examination you may need to be dilated. This will consist of the eye doctor using drops to enlarge your pupils. This will allow the doctor to get a better view of the internal structures of the eye. After dilation you will have increased sensitivity to light and it is recommended to use sunglasses upon completion of your eye exam.

The eye exam cost will vary from place to place. Generally private practices and opthamologists will have higher rates for comprehensive eye examinations. When seeing a new doctor be sure to ask what the exam consists of to make sure you are fully covered.
